The Ministry of Defence closes its UFO desk
Ministry of Defence, United Kingdom
Witness account
The Ministry of Defence ended its dedicated public UFO reporting function in late 2009. Internal papers include a November 11 recommendation from Carl Mantell to Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth, arguing that continued processing of these reports offered no defence benefit. The reporting telephone and email service closed around the subsequent December announcement. A precise single-day closure should not replace the documented sequence of recommendation, approval and implementation.
Public record
Released internal correspondence and the National Archives' 2013 guide show the policy rationale and transition. They establish the withdrawal of a public reporting and administrative service. They do not establish that every defence or aviation system ceased identifying objects, monitoring airspace or investigating security incidents.
