COMETA: a private report with prominent contributors

The private COMETA association published Les OVNI et la Défense: À quoi doit-on se préparer? in a special issue of VSD on 16 July 1999. Its contributors included people with military, technical and scientific backgrounds. The report reviewed selected UFO cases and argued that an extraterrestrial explanation merited serious consideration, alongside recommendations concerning defence and preparedness.
Public record
The report’s publication and contents are documented, and a copy has been hosted by GEIPAN. GEIPAN subsequently clarified that the report represented a private association and that making it available did not signify CNES endorsement. The professional status of contributors does not turn their collective publication into a French government finding.
