Witness account

Pilot Frederick Valentich vanished while flying a Cessna 182L, registration VH-DSJ, from Moorabbin toward King Island. During radio exchanges he described unusual lights or an object near his aircraft and reported engine trouble. Contact then ended. The disappearance and the radio account are securely distinct from the later hypothesis that he and the aircraft were abducted.

Public record

The Department of Transport investigation and radio transcript are the primary evidentiary foundation. National Archives of Australia identifies the records and discusses the episode. No recovered aircraft has established a definitive cause, and the pilot’s description does not provide an independently measured range or trajectory for another vehicle. Later reports from people on land need their original submission dates.
