Witness account

Deputy Dale Spaur and auxiliary deputy Wilbur Neff reported a bright object during early-morning patrol and followed it eastward, eventually crossing into Pennsylvania. Other officers became involved along the route. Retellings often turn the chase into a measured performance demonstration, although the observers were judging a distant light while moving in vehicles.

Public record

The official Blue Book collection and NICAP investigator William Weitzel’s material preserve the competing accounts. Written statements are especially valuable for reconstructing positions and changes in apparent direction. The Air Force attributed the observations to a combination of an initial satellite and Venus; officers and civilian investigators rejected that reconstruction. Photographs attributed to unrelated or incompletely linked observers should not automatically be added as images of the pursued object.
