Witness account

A brilliant fireball crossed the Great Lakes region in the late afternoon. Reports that something had fallen near Kecksburg prompted searches involving local people and military personnel. Later accounts described an acorn-shaped object, unusual markings and removal by the military. Those later details must not be represented as a uniformly documented description from the night itself.

Public record

Contemporary newspapers and astronomical observations support the large regional fireball. A trajectory reconstructed from such observations has been used to argue for a meteor ending near Lake Erie rather than a craft landing at Kecksburg. Leslie Kean’s later NASA records litigation documents a records-search dispute and the recovery of documents, not a court finding that NASA possessed an alien vehicle.
