Valensole: Maurice Masse, alleged occupants, and ground traces
Valensole, Basses-Alpes (now Alpes-de-Haute-Provence)

Witness account
At about 5:45 in the morning, lavender farmer Maurice Masse reported a small landed object and two diminutive figures. The early newspaper account describes an egg or rugby-ball shape, legs and a central support. The familiar mature narrative includes immobilization, but its full detail should not be assumed to have appeared in the first newspaper report.
Public record
Contemporary reporting records a gendarmerie inquiry and examination of a hole and disturbed ground. It also documents rapid public access to the field, which compromised the scene. A military-helicopter possibility was discussed almost immediately in connection with maneuvers in Provence; this was an investigative hypothesis, not a verified identification of a particular helicopter and crew.
