Witness account

Radar operators and aircrew reported unusual targets around Washington on two successive July weekends. Interceptors were dispatched, and press attention made the episodes a national event. Reports came from different stations, observers and times; a continuous, fully correlated radar-and-visual track should not be presumed from the popular shorthand “UFOs over the Capitol.”

Public record

Contemporary operations accounts, witness interviews, military explanations and a later Civil Aeronautics Administration radar study document the incidents. General Samford’s major Pentagon press conference took place on 29 July.
