December 1950–1954 / T050
Canada’s Project Magnet and the later Second Storey committee
Ottawa / Shirley’s Bay, Ontario
Witness account
Department of Transport engineer Wilbert Smith obtained approval for Project Magnet, connecting UFO questions with research into geomagnetism and possible propulsion. His extraterrestrial interpretation became a point of disagreement within government. In 1952, the Defence Research Board’s separate Project Second Storey brought scientists and military officials together to advise on the subject.
Public record
Canadian departmental files, Smith papers and Second Storey minutes are examined in Matthew Hayes’s archival history. Both activities ended their official phases in 1954.
