Behind the Flying Saucers and the exposure of Newton and GeBauer
United States; Denver, Colorado, and the publishing market
Witness account
Scully’s Behind the Flying Saucers brought the alleged recovered craft and dead crews to a large readership in 1950. Earlier Variety columns and Newton’s March lecture show how the story circulated before book publication. Accounts giving a book month should distinguish an advertised release from confirmed publication; this chronology conservatively retains the year.
Public record
Cahn’s September 1952 TRUE article investigated the principal sources, alleged expertise and purported saucer material. His August 1956 follow-up described the oil-investment scheme and the November 1953 fraud convictions of Newton and GeBauer. These were convictions involving a financial swindle, not a court judgment directly adjudicating an alien crash.
