Thomas Mantell dies while pursuing an unidentified object
Godman Field / Franklin, Kentucky

Witness account
Kentucky Air National Guard pilot Thomas Mantell climbed in a P-51 Mustang after an object had been observed from Godman Field and reported elsewhere. Other pilots broke off; Mantell continued and his aircraft crashed, killing him. The death gave UFO reporting an immediate national-security and human dimension, and helped make this one of the classic early military cases.
Public record
Flight and tower reports, the crash investigation and later Air Force reassessment provide a documentary basis. The object was not recovered as an extraordinary craft.
