Kenneth Arnold and the modern flying-saucer wave
Cascade Mountains near Mount Rainier, Washington

Witness account
Private pilot Kenneth Arnold reported nine bright objects moving in formation near the Cascades. He estimated extraordinary speed by timing their apparent passage relative to mountains. The next day the East Oregonian published his account, and wire-service coverage helped trigger a large reporting wave. The expression flying saucer rapidly became a worldwide label.
Public record
A contemporary newspaper account, Arnold’s written report and drawings, and recorded interviews preserve several early versions. There is no photograph of the objects and no independent measurement of their distance.
