RAF collection of 'night phenomena' before the famous foo-fighter publicity

RAF operations over occupied Europe

Witness account

The RAF began collecting reports of unusual 'night phenomena' during 1942. The National Archives identifies a separate set of December 1943 reports from No. 115 Squadron, alongside broader Air Ministry files. These records show that military concern about unusual aerial lights preceded the widely publicized American foo-fighter accounts of late 1944 and early 1945.

Public record

The archival guide gives concrete file references: AIR 2/5070 for Air Ministry night-phenomena material and AIR 14/2800 for the squadron reports. It frames the wartime inquiry around possible enemy weapons and aircraft. This entry documents the collection activity and the existence of report files; it does not pretend those files were all examined during this research pass.
