The Aurora airship crash and purported burial
Aurora, Wise County, Texas
Witness account
A newspaper story attributed to S. E. Haydon alleged that an airship struck a local windmill, was destroyed, and left a dead occupant identified within the story as a being from Mars. The alleged burial at Aurora's cemetery later became a durable part of the town's UFO reputation. The event's claimed date and the newspaper's publication date are separate.
Public record
The Texas State Historical Association identifies the 19 April article as fictional news, and the city's own historical account describes a tall tale. Texas Almanac places the account within the broader April 1897 Texas airship reporting. Later memorialization and interest in the cemetery establish the story's cultural afterlife, not an independently verified alien body.
