The Sacramento lights and the beginning of the 1896 airship wave
Sacramento, California, followed by reports elsewhere in California

Witness account
Sacramento residents reported a moving light on the evening of 17 November 1896. Newspaper coverage quickly framed it as a possible airship, with descriptions of a powerful searchlight and, in some accounts, voices or a visible structure. Subsequent stories spread the airship theme across California. Reports describing only a light should not be silently upgraded to sightings of a complete machine.
Public record
The San Francisco Call's 18 November issue and its 19 November front-page story are identifiable contemporary sources. A surviving transcription of the latter preserves disagreement among witnesses: some claimed substantial details while others described only illumination. The reporting belongs to a period of intense interest in prospective aviation and newspaper stories about secret inventors.
