1803 alleged arrival; securely described manuscript witnesses include c. 1815 and 1825 / T010
Utsuro-bune, the 'hollow boat' and foreign woman
Hitachi coast, traditionally Harayadori or Haratono-hama; exact location contested

Witness account
Edo-period manuscripts recount a round, enclosed vessel washing ashore in 1803, containing an unfamiliar woman, a box, and writing local people could not understand. The original narrative is maritime: the vessel is encountered at the coast, not observed flying. Modern UFO imagery draws heavily on the boat's illustrated shape.
Public record
Researcher Tanaka Kazuo has identified multiple versions, including Ōshuku zakki around 1815 and Toen shōsetsu in 1825. Nippon.com's interview reproduces examples and discusses privately held documents thought to date to 1803. The versions differ in dates, place names, clothing, and other details. Tanaka also reports that he found no official shipwreck record matching his initial Russian-castaway hypothesis.
