James Everell and the Muddy River light
Muddy River near Boston; light reportedly toward Charlestown

Witness account
Winthrop recorded that James Everell and two companions saw a bright light while in a boat on the Muddy River. The account describes changing appearance and rapid movement toward Charlestown and back over two or three hours. It also says the men found themselves farther upstream than expected. Modern narratives sometimes relabel that last detail as missing time or abduction.
Public record
The source is a contemporary governor's journal recounting other people's experience. Winthrop's favorable description of Everell's character is character testimony, not an independent observation. The narrative records surprise at the boat's position, but it does not describe occupants, an examination aboard a craft, or a period of lost awareness. Printed editions and calendar conventions require care before attaching an exact March date.
