Witness account

A printed broadside describes a dawn spectacle near the Sun involving colored globes, crosses, rods, and a dark spear-like shape. Its narrative likens the motion to a battle and says forms descended and disappeared with smoke. The familiar illustration is a woodcut accompanying that account, not an observational photograph or a technical plan.

Public record

Zentralbibliothek Zürich preserves and digitizes the 1561 colored woodcut and letterpress sheet, catalogued as PAS II 1/12, from Johann Jakob Wick's collection. The accompanying text explicitly interprets the phenomenon as a divine warning and calls for repentance. A modern translation preserves both the spectacular description and this religious conclusion. The document is contemporary, but independent witness interviews and recovered debris are not supplied.
